Carlo Rossi (architect)
Carlo di Giovanni Rossi (also Karl Ivanovich Rossi * 29. December 1775 in Naples † 6 April and jul. / 18th April 1849 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was an Italian - Russian architect . He was best known for designing large parts of the St. Petersburg city center in the classicism style.
Rossi was born the son of an Italian dancer. The father is unknown, contemporary rumors went so far as to suspect Tsar Paul I as the father. After an apprenticeship with the architect Vincenzo Brenna in Saint Petersburg, he traveled to Italy from 1801 to 1803. From 1808 to 1814 he worked in Moscow and then until 1816 in Pavlovsk . He spent the rest of his life in Saint Petersburg again.
Here he designed numerous squares, including the Schlossplatz and the Platz der Künste , the Michaelspalais, in which the Russian Museum is housed, as well as the Alexandrinsky Theater and the Rossi Street that leads directly to it.
