Senate and Synod ( Russian Сенат и Синод or Здание Сената и Синода) is an ensemble of buildings in the center of Saint Petersburg . It was built from 1829 to 1834 under the direction of Carlo Rossi .

The building, the last work of Italian architect, is located on the west side of the Senate Square (1925-2008 Place of Decembrists ) and refers in architecture and size to the east building opposite the Admiralty , which from 1806 to 1823 according to designs by Andrejan Sakharov was built in the Empire style.

The ensemble consists of two symmetrical buildings, the (secular) senate on the left and the (spiritual) synod on the right, which is connected by a triumphal arch in the middle. The entire building is richly decorated with sculptures by Stepan (Stephan) Pimenow , Wassili Demut-Malinowski , PP Sokolow , NA Tokarew, I. Leppe, PW Swinzow and NA Ustinow. Above the triumphal arch, two figures represent justice and piety, they should symbolize the unity of secular and ecclesiastical power (but also denote the field to which the rulers wanted the church to be restricted).

The Senate (1711-1917) was originally the highest Reich authority for justice and administration, but its importance and influence later changed many times.

The Synod (1721-1917), instead of the Patriarchate of Peter the Great set up , was the supreme body of the Russian Orthodox Church .

Later functions

From 1955 the twin building served the Central Russian Historical Archive (RGIA); Since May 27, 2008, the extensively restored building with its restored white and yellow colors has housed the Russian Constitutional Court . On May 27, 2009, President Medvedev opened the library of President BN Yeltsin here .

monument

In front of the Senate and Synod stands the famous equestrian monument by Falconet for Peter the Great, 1782. The base of the monument consists of a Finnish boulder that had been brought to St. Petersburg in 5 years of laborious work.

The Petersburg wedding couples meet at the monument on the square on their traditional visit to three important places in Russian history.
