Senate Square (Saint Petersburg)
The Senate Square ( Russian Сенатская площадь ), formerly Decembrists Square (Площадь Декабристов) and before 1925 St. Peter's Square (Петрова площадь) is a place in Saint Petersburg on the left bank of the Great Neva . The St. Isaac's Cathedral , the Admiralty and the riding arena are also nearby .
Its second name comes from the noble revolutionary movement that was formed after the Patriotic War of 1812 and that was formed on December 14th July. / December 26, 1825 greg. gathered in the square in order to overthrow Tsar Nicholas I. The Decembrist uprising was put down. In 1925 it was renamed Dekabristenplatz to commemorate the events of the past.
The square is limited to the east by the Admiralty building . To the west is the building complex of the Senate and the Holy Synod (today the seat of the Constitutional Court of Russia ).
In the center of the square is the famous Brazen Rider , a bronze equestrian statue of Tsar Peter the Great .
On July 29, 2008, the square got its original name back.
