Gabriele Ritschel

Gabriele "Gabi" Ritschel (born November 24, 1961 in Rüsselsheim ) is a former German judoka who competed in the light middleweight division.

The 1.68 m tall Gabriele Ritschel was German individual champion in 1981, 1987, 1988 and 1989. With the JC Rüsselsheim she won the team title in the Judo Bundesliga in 1983, 1986 and 1987 .

Her first major international success was winning the bronze medal at the European Championships in 1982 . At the end of 1982 she also fought bronze at the Judo World Championships in Paris in 1982 , when she was only defeated by the French Martine Rottier . In 1983 she reached the final of the European Championships , where she lost to the British Ann Hughes . In 1985 she reached the final of the European Championships again , this time she was defeated by the Pole Bogusława Olechnowicz . In 1986 she lost to the British Diane Bell in the semi-finals of the European Championships , but secured the bronze medal by beating the Dutch woman Belinda Stoeltjes . Also in 1987 she won a bronze medal at the European Championships .

After a weaker year in 1988, Gabriele Ritschel returned with a seventh place at the European Championships in 1989 . At the Judo World Championships in 1989, she lost to the French Catherine Fleury in the semifinals , but secured the bronze medal with a victory over Diane Bell. At the European Championships in 1990 in Frankfurt, she lost in the semifinals to Diane Bell, but won the battle for bronze against Jelena Petrowa from the Soviet Union. After a cruciate ligament rupture in 1991, Ritschel's international career ended the year before the Olympic premiere of women's judo.
