The Oswald-von-Nell-Breuning-Schule is a special needs school founded in 1999 with a focus on educational assistance in Offenbach am Main in Hesse . It is sponsored by the private Theresien Child and Youth Welfare Center , a member of the Caritas Association Mainz of the Diocese of Mainz , and is officially recognized as a substitute school . It is named after the Catholic social philosopher Oswald von Nell-Breuning .

The school is divided into three departments, which are located in different locations in the city. Department II, which has existed since the 2005/2006 school year, is of particular importance: this is the only school in all of Germany that teaches so-called "twice exceptional" students, i.e. children who are intellectually gifted , but due to with a mental illness such as autism or ADHD are unable to develop their full potential in a traditional school setting. Department 2 of the school was awarded the seal of approval for gifted people by the Hessian Ministry of Culture in 2015 . The subject matter is based on the curriculum for Hessian high schools. At this special school , pupils can take the Abitur or, if the goal is not achievable, also the secondary school leaving certificate.

The pupils come from all over Germany, for foreign pupils there are living groups available on the school premises as well as decentralized in the city. The students are taught across grades in so-called learning groups; there are five students for one teacher.
