World map according to O. Winkel

Oswald Winkel (born January 7, 1874 in Leipzig ; † July 18, 1953 there ) was a German cartographer .

Winkel worked for various cartographic publishers. Among other things, he played a major role in the design and processing of the overview and travel maps of the Baedeker travel guides .

He became known for his low-distortion representation of world maps, especially the angle-triplet projection . In 1913 he developed a network design for total images of the earth, which is created by forming the arithmetic mean between Aitov's design (poles shown as points) and the center-spaced cylinder design (poles shown as lines) with two true-to-length parallel circles.
