Otfried Müller (theologian)

Otfried Müller (born January 24, 1907 in Posen , † April 24, 1986 in Erfurt ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Life

Müller was born in 1907 as the son of a high school teacher. He first attended high school in Königshütte and then that in Berlin-Zehlendorf. Finally he passed the Abitur in 1925 at the State Catholic St. Matthias High School in Breslau. Among other things, the later cathedral vicar of Cardinal Bertram , Johannes Kaps , went to school with him .

After graduating from high school, Müller studied philosophy and theology until 1930 and, for a short time, history at the universities in Breslau and Innsbruck. On February 1, 1931, he was ordained a priest by Adolf Cardinal Bertram in Breslau. After the ordination he worked as a chaplain in Mühlbock (Neumark) for two years. After that he was chaplain in Protsch-Weide in the district of Breslau and in Breslau. Cardinal Bertram appointed him his secret secretary on January 1, 1935, which he remained until September 15, 1937. In 1937 Müller passed the parish exam and went to Rome for a study visit. There he turned to canon law studies and during this time lived in the priestly college at Campo Santo Teutonico. He obtained the degree of Baccalaureus in Canon Law and returned to Silesia in 1938. There he was Prefect of the Archbishop's Knabenkonvikt Albertinum in Gleiwitz until November 14, 1940. In Breslau he received his doctorate in theology on April 16, 1940.

Act

Müller became a pastor in Schwiebus in 1941, where he was arrested in 1945 after the Soviet invasion and severely abused. He was also forced to work. On June 29, 1945 he was expelled from Schwiebus and was active as a pastor in Berlin for a short time. In December 1945 he became chaplain in Delitzsch and in November 1946 assessor at the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, where he was entrusted with setting up pastoral care for expellees.

In 1950 he was appointed lecturer in dogmatics on February 1st by Erich Kleineidam , the rector of the Philosophical-Theological University in Königstein . At the turn of the year 1951/1952 Müller took over the representation of the professorship for dogmatics and fundamental theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, which he held until his appointment as professor at the Philosophical-Theological Studies in, again founded by Erich Kleineidam Erfurt held. This school was the only one that was authorized to provide academic training for candidates for the Catholic priesthood in the GDR - Müller accepted the position in 1953. During this time, Müller worked on his habilitation in Munich. In 1962 he attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council .

Müller retired on July 1, 1973, in the same year he was also appointed honorary papal prelate.
