Otfried Weintritt

Otfried Weintritt (born March 30, 1955 in Gaggenau ) is a German orientalist and Islamic scholar .

Life

Weintritt studied Islamic studies, modern German literary history and history at the University of Freiburg . In 1982/83 he stayed in Kuwait to study and received his doctorate in 1988 in Islamic Studies. He then wrote articles for the handbook of historical book collections . 1990 to 1996 activities at the Universities of Münster (assistant substitute) and Freiburg, where he wrote volume 27 of the biographical lexicon of Ṣalāḥaddīn Ḫalīl b. Aybak aṣ-Ṣafadī edited (DFG project); This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship from the DFG. 2001 to 2003 participation in the project “Der Europäische Sonderweg” of the Breuninger Foundation Stuttgart.

Weintritt completed his habilitation in Bonn in 2007, after which he prepared an expert report for the sixth report on the elderly on behalf of the federal government . From 2008 to 2013 he was a lecturer at the Universities of St. Gallen and Zurich, and from 2010 to 2011 as a substitute professor at the Asia-Orient Institute at the University of Tübingen . From 2009 to 2015 he examined the faḍāʾil genre in Islamic-Arabic literature (DFG project).

He is a private lecturer at the University of Bonn. His areas of work include material-rich genre studies of Islamic-Arabic literature (historiography, Faḍāʾil) as well as cultural, social and intellectual history analyzes of the Islamic order of life. He researches the question of the requirements and consequences of the Islamic lifestyle. In addition, the historical climate research of the Middle East, Persia and North India is another of his main focuses.
