Ōtsuka Seiyaku KK ( Japanese 大 塚 製 薬 株式会社 , Ōtsuka Seiyaku Kabushiki kaisha , English Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. ) is a Japanese pharmaceutical company . The company was founded in 1964 and is headquartered in Chiyoda , Tokyo . Ōtsuka Seiyaku is part of the Ōtsuka Group, which employs around 44,000 people in 158 companies at 29 different locations worldwide.

The focus of research is the development of drugs and healing methods for respiratory diseases, eye diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological and mental diseases as well as Parkinson's , tuberculosis and cancer .
Furthermore, various medical treatment devices are researched and developed. A method for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infections using a breath test device was applied for as a patent in 1997/1998 and introduced in Japan in 2000. In the 2012 financial year, 1.4 billion euros were spent on research and development worldwide.
Products
Ōtsuka Seiyaku sells drugs for the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system ( schizophrenia , bipolar disorder ), the vascular and circulatory system ( cardiovascular diseases ), as well as inflammatory bowel diseases - partly as a co-doctorate .
Another area is the manufacture of cosmetics and nutritional supplements , so-called nutraceuticals . Oronamin C, for example, ranks second behind Coca Cola Real Gold among the best- selling energy drinks in Japan.

- Abilify, with the active ingredient aripiprazole, used to treat schizophrenia
- Pletal with the active ingredient cilostazol for the oral treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease in stage II ( intermittent claudication ).
- Samsca with the active ingredient tolvaptan, used to treat patients with hyponatremia caused by Schwartz-Bartter syndrome .
