Otto Jírovec (born January 31, 1907 in Prague ; † March 7, 1972 ibid) was a Czech microbiologist , after whom the pathogen Pneumocystis jirovecii is named.

In 1952 Otto Jírovec published a work with Josef Vanek on Parasitic Interstitial Plasma Cell Pneumonia in premature infants. Genetic research methods later showed that the pathogen Pneumocystis carinii which occurs in rats is not identical to the pathogen which is pathogenic to humans. The human pathogen was then named after Otto Jírovec.
