Pneumocystis carinii is a fungus foundin rodents . The exciter is the filamentous fungi associated (Ascomycota). In 1909 Carlos Chagas discoveredthis mushroom.
morphology
Pneumocystis carinii is 1.5 to 2 micrometers long. Its shape is elongated and its cell membrane is covered with a mucous membrane . Repeated division creates cysts with six to eight spores . It cannot be grown on culture media in the laboratory .
History
For a long time Pneumocystis carinii was thought to be the causative agent of pneumonia caused by immunodeficiency . Today we know, however, that the causative agent of this opportunistic pneumonia in humans differs slightly from Pneumocystis carinii . The name Pneumocystis jirovecii was therefore introduced for the pathogen in humans in order to differentiate it from Pneumocystis carinii .
