Pneumocystis is a systematically quite isolated genus of the hose fungus , which alone forms the class Pneumocystidomycetes . The species live as extracellular parasites in the lungs of mammals .
features
Pneumocystis does not form a mycelium or an asocarp . The vegetative cells are thin-walled, irregular in shape and multiply through simple cell division.
Sexual reproduction is initiated by the fusion of two vegetative cells. This is followed by karyogamy and the formation of a cyst wall. Through meiosis and mitosis in some species arise four or eight ascospores by the cyst ( ascus be limited). The cyst wall pops up and releases the ascospores.
Systematics
The genus forms its own class within the Taphrinomycotina .
There are at least five types:
- Pneumocystis carinii
- Pneumocystis jirovecii
- Pneumocystis murina
- Pneumocystis oryctolagi
- Pneumocystis wakefieldiae
