Otto Luyken (born November 4, 1884 in Siegen , † February 3, 1953 in Weener ) was a German gardener and director of the "Hesse nurseries" in Weener. He bred the cherry laurel variety named after him .

Life

His parents were Emil Luyken (1845–1906) and Johanna Hesse (1848–1934). He attended school in Siegen and then began horticultural training in West Prussia and Erfurt, in France and England. After participating in the First World War , he joined the "Hesse tree nurseries" in Weener, which were owned by his uncle, Hermann Albert Hesse. In 1920 Luyken took over the management of the tree nurseries as director, which since then has been a family limited company. operated. The company achieved a high reputation under his leadership. During the Second World War he was drafted into the army for a long time and returned sick. A dilatation of his lungs has caused him many complaints since then. After his death, the tree nurseries could not be kept in family ownership. Wolfgang von Cölln took over the business.

The "Hesse Nurseries" were founded in 1879 by Hermann A. Hesse (1852–1937). The laurel shrub "Otto Luyken" was grown in nurseries in 1940 and launched in 1953 (Otto's year of death).
