Otto Vilsmaier

Otto Vilsmaier (born February 27, 1962 in Plattling ) has been a member of the German team at the Paralympics in wheelchair table tennis since 1996 . He successfully participated in the Paralympics and in European and World Championships. Vilsmaier lives in Plattling in the Scheuer district.

Career

He attended elementary school and then did an apprenticeship as a car mechanic. In 1981 he was trained as a papermaker at the new paper mill in Plattling. He was a footballer (SV Pankofen) and air rifle shooter .

Since a serious car accident in 1982 he has been paralyzed and dependent on a wheelchair. He retrained and has since worked as an office worker at MD Paper.

In 1989 he joined TSV Plattling and founded the wheelchair table tennis division. The new TSV department began with five players, sports doctor Ulrich Dachs and trainer / supervisor Christian Mahal, and two years later it was able to take part in the first Bavarian championship and in 1993 for the first time in a German championship. In 1996 the first international success was achieved at the Paralympics in Atlanta (bronze with the team). In the course of the following years numerous participations and medal wins in international world ranking tournaments, European championships and world championships followed. After his fourth Paralympic participation in Beijing in 2008, Vilsmaier ended his career on an international level.

For winning the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games, he received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Horst Köhler on March 16, 2005 .

In the class of his degree of disability (Tetra 1), Vilsmaier is considered to be one of the most outstanding German players in recent years.

He was the first ever Paralympic medal winner in his hometown Plattling history.

Since July 28, 2004 he has been the disability officer for the district of Deggendorf. In 2004 he was awarded the Bladilotaler of the city of Plattling .
