Ouibus long-distance buses in front of the Paris-Bercy train station.

The French company Comuto Pro , a subsidiary of Comuto SA , operates national and international long-distance bus services under the name BlaBlaBus ; Comuto's original business is the operation of Europe's leading car pool agency (under the BlaBlaCar brand ). BlaBlaBus was founded in July 2012 as a subsidiary of the French state railway SNCF under the name Idbus (original spelling iDBUS), later renamed Ouibus and sold to BlaBlaCar in November 2018. In 2018, the offer included 300 destinations in 10 European countries.

history

Established as a subsidiary of the SNCF

First made public in November 2011 under the internal project name "Speed", the company started operations on July 23, 2012 under the original name iDBUS. Its first hub at Paris-Bercy train station offered connections to Amsterdam, Brussels, Lille and London. National traffic between Paris and Lille has been permitted since August 29, 2012.

With the start of connections to Milan and Turin on December 17, 2012, a second hub was created at Lyon-Perrache station . Since January 24, 2013, national traffic has also been permitted between Lyon and Paris-Bercy and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. Since May 27, 2013 iDBUS has also been offering a connection between Marseille / Aix-en-Provence and Nice, Genoa and Milan. Since October 14, 2013, a night connection between Lyon-Perrache and Barcelona has been part of the route.

On September 3, 2015, shortly after the liberalization of long-distance bus transport in France, the company was renamed Ouibus. The route network was also massively expanded. By 2018, 12 million passengers were transported; The company held a market share of 40% in France, but had a turnover of EUR 55 million and a loss of EUR 35 million in 2018.

Takeover by BlaBlacar

On November 12, 2018 it was announced that BlaBlaCar Ouibus would be taking over from SNCF in order to expand the route network internationally; at the same time, the SNCF and the historical shareholders of BlaBlaCar will subscribe to a capital increase for BlaBlaCar; SNCF is therefore from now on as a minority shareholder in Comuto, the operator of BlaBlacar, and will also be represented on its board of directors. The goal is to be able to compete more effectively with private cars. Ouibus was effectively integrated into BlablaCar from July 2019 and the Ouibus brand was gradually abandoned; As early as June 2019, the company launched its first lines in France, Belgium and Germany under the new BlaBlaBus banner .
