Outburst! is a family game by Brian Hersch , which was published by his publisher Hersch and Company in 1986 and has been published and offered in numerous editions and special editions by various publishers. The current edition was published by Hasbro in 2017 .

It is a party and knowledge game played in two teams in which the players have to give as many correct answers as possible to a given generic term.

Theme and equipment

The game Outburst! is a knowledge game played in two teams in which the other players have to give as many correct answers as possible to a generic term. The core of the game are keyword cards with a generic term and 10 search terms each, which are hidden under a red field and can only be read through a corresponding filter.

In older versions, the game material consisted of 200 cue cards, the solution filter, a game board with a scoring track, two marker stones or playing figures, three joker chips for each player color, a 10-sided die and an hourglass. In the current versions, the game board and the playing figures are dispensed with and there are more keyword cards.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, two teams are formed. Each team receives three joker chips and, in the case of the older editions, one pawn that is placed on the starting field of the game board. The two teams play alternately, with one team providing the guessing team and the other checking the answers.

A player gets the hourglass and the card reader. He draws a card and reads the umbrella term to the opposing team. The team can decide whether to accept this card or use a joker chip to pass it on to the opposing team. If the team decides to accept, the player inserts the card into the reader, turns the hourglass and the guessing team calls out terms that match the generic term. If a term comes up that is also on the card, it is marked by the reader. When the hourglass runs out, the round ends and correct answers are counted. If the team rejects the card, it is put aside and the other team must play it in the following round. A new card is drawn for the current team and cannot be rejected again. When counting, each correct answer counts one point. After the counting, the guessing team rolls the 10-sided die to determine a bonus answer. If the team gave this answer correctly, it receives a bonus of three points (when using a game board, the corresponding playing field indicates the bonus value).

The game ends when a team has reached 60 points or the end of the scoring track and has thus won.

Issues and developments

Outburst! was developed by the American game designer Brian Hersch and published by his publisher Hersch and Company as a version with cards and game board. In 1988 the game was released by Parker Brothers , which brought out further editions until 2001. The first German edition appeared in 1996 by MB Spiele and in 2001 Mattel published the game under the name TOP 10! . The current edition was published in 2017 by the publisher and toy manufacturer Hasbro in both an English and a German version.
