Ovarian vein thrombosis in the computed tomography: You can see a flooded thrombus in the right ovarian vein (left in the picture), which is somewhat darker than the contrasting blood.

A complete or incomplete occlusion ( thrombosis ) of the ovarian vein , which supplies blood to the ovaries , is known as ovarian vein thrombosis .

The lack of blood supply causes severe, colic-like pain in the area of the affected ovary (mostly on one side on the right), similar to appendicitis . There may be a high fever, but not necessarily. With a septic course, the clinical picture is life-threatening.

The disease usually occurs two to six days postpartum . Imaging procedures ( CT ) and laboratory tests (leukocytes and CRP ) are decisive for the diagnosis .

The treatment consists of intravenous anticoagulant therapy with heparin and the administration of antibiotics .
