The Overland Track is one of the most famous Australian long-distance hiking trails , located in Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park on the island of Tasmania .

The track stretches 40 miles through the Tasmanian wilderness from Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair . The hiking route leads through the Tasmanian highlands, past Tasmania's highest mountain, Mount Ossa (1617 m). Depending on the equipment and weather conditions, the track can be tackled in around five to seven days. Due to its great popularity, a booking system was introduced in 2007. In the main season (October 1st to May 31st) you have to book a start date for AUD 200.- (as of 2018). A maximum of 34 people are allowed to start the track in Cradle Mountain per day. In addition, you have to hike from north to south in the summer months for environmental reasons. In the summer months the places are often fully booked.
