Owain Fychan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Owain Fychan († 1187 ) was a ruler of part of the Welsh principality of Powys Fadog .

He was a son of Madog ap Maredudd and his wife Susanna, a daughter of Gruffydd ap Cynan . After his father's death in 1160, he became Lord of Mechain and Cynllaith. His territories lay between that of his older brother Gruffydd ap Madog and that of his cousin Owain Cyfeiliog . In 1163 he and his cousin Owain Cyfeiliog conquered Carreghofa Castle on the Shropshire border . The castle was recaptured by King Heinrich II as early as 1165 . 1166 attacked Owain Fychan together with Owain Cyfeiliog their uncle Iorwerth Goch and expelled him from Mochnant . They divided Mochnant, the dividing line is still the border between Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire . Owain Fychan was again in possession of Carreghofa Castle in 1187 when he was murdered in a nightly raid on the castle by Gwenwynwyn and Cadwallon, two sons of Owain Cyfeiliog.

His heir became his son Llywelyn ap Owain Fychan, his descendants were in the possession of a greatly reduced rule of Mechain until the end of the 13th century.
