Oxybelus bipunctatus is a hymenoptera fromthe Crabronidae family .

features

The wasp reaches a body length of 3.5 to 6 millimeters (females) or 3 to 5 millimeters (males). One can distinguish the species relatively well from the other species of the genus Oxybelus . The heart-shaped abdomen is shiny bronze. At least on the first two tergites there are whitish spots on the sides. The mandibles are often colored yellow at the base.

Occurrence

The species is distributed in North Africa, Europe up to 63 ° north latitude and Asia, east to Japan, and in North America. It colonizes various sandy habitats, also in human settlement areas. The species flies from June to September, with a second generation presumably being trained. It can be found widespread in Central Europe.

Way of life

The nest of Oxybelus bipunctatus , which is often created jointly, consists of a tunnel up to six centimeters deep, at the end of which there is only one cell. The brood is supplied with flies, whereby the females, typical of digger wasps of the genus Oxybelus , transport their victims in flight hanging from the sting. The return flight of the wasp female to the nest can be observed frequently that they of parasitic living flesh flies of the genus Metopia followed. The female wasps try to shake them off with flight maneuvers and quickly disappear into the nest when they reach their destination. The female flies try to lay their egg on the abdomen of the female wasp, as do the females of the genus Macronychia . Hedychridium ardens has been identified as a cuckoo wasp in the species.
