The Ocean Bridge is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that is located north of Harpstedt in the Wildeshauser Geest in Lower Saxony . It is the only crossing over the swampy Delmetal between the district of Klein Amerika and the Harpstedter Wald.

history

The forerunner of the bridge was a simple footbridge , which was built on this spot in 1925 by Heinrich Plate, landlord of the former “Amerika” inn. Based on the way to or from America , it was called the Ocean Bridge. In 1967, with the help of the THW local association Syke, the footbridge was replaced by a real bridge and provided with a long footbridge, which had to be extensively renovated in 1982. After about 20 years, the increasing deterioration of the bridge could no longer be stopped, so that it was closed for safety reasons. In May 2006, the dismantling of the old and subsequent new construction of the current bridge began, which was ceremoniously handed over on August 8, 2006.

Current condition

The new ocean bridge is 175 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Additional bays are built in at two places so that wheelchair users can pass each other. On the west side there is a refuge with benches and a table. The bridge is part of the Bremen - Osnabrück Bridge Cycle Route .
