Páll Hreinsson

Páll Hreinsson (born February 20, 1963 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic university professor, dean and judge (president) of the EFTA Court of Justice in Luxembourg .

education

Until 1983 Páll Hreinsson attended the Menntaskólinn við Hamrahlíð grammar school . In 1988 he obtained the title Candidatus Juris ( cand.jur. , Title similar to the master’s ) at the University of Iceland ( Icelandic Háskóli Íslands ). From 1990 to 1991 he studied administrative law and public law at the University of Copenhagen . On February 5, 2005 , he received his PhD in Law from the University of Iceland.

Professional activities

Páll Hreinsson was assistant judge at the Reykjavík City Court from 1988 to 1991, and assistant to the Althing Ombudsman (in the parliamentary ombudsman's office ) from 1991 to 1998 . From 1998 to 1999 he was a lecturer (Isl .: Dósent við lagadeild ) and from 1999 to 2007 Professor of Law (Isl .: Prófessor við lagadeild ) at the University of Iceland. From 2002 to 2005 he was Vice Dean and from 2005 to 2007 Dean of the Faculty of Law and other functions at the University of Iceland.

In 2007 he was appointed judge at the Supreme Court ( Hæstiréttur ) of Iceland (until 2011).

In December 2008, Páll Hreinsson was appointed chairman of the parliamentary committee of inquiry under Icelandic Law No. 142/2008 investigating the causes of the Icelandic financial crisis 2008-2011 . While the committee was working, he was given leave of absence from the duties of judge of the Supreme Court.

He has been a judge at the EFTA Court in Luxembourg since September 15, 2015 and the President of this Court since January 1, 2018 (until 2020).
