European pétanque championship of the Espoirs 2008
In 2008, the Confédération Européenne de Pétanque CEP held a European championship for the Espoirs ( U23 ) age group for the first time .
Those athletes who will be at least 18 years old in the corresponding year, but not yet 23 years old, belong to the Espoirs age group. The age groups from 1986 to 1990 were therefore eligible to compete in the 2008 European Championship. The event took place from April 18-20, 2008 in Saint-Jean-d'Angély . There were separate competitions for women and men.
Of the German-speaking countries, only Germany had contacted me. The German women (Julia Würthle (Horb), Anna Lazridis (Marl), Muriel Hess (Horb) and Judith Berganski (Lübeck)) became vice-European champions.
The German men qualified for the final round, just dropped out in the preliminary round and finished in 5th place.
mode
In both the qualification and the final round, contrary to the usual mode of other world and European championships, not only triplets were played, but
- Round: 1 triplet (with interchangeability)
- Round: parallel a double and a tête-à-tête (both without the possibility of substitution)
There was one point for every win.
Qualification round (men)
16 nations registered for the men's competition. In October 2007 four qualification tournaments with four teams each were held. The two best teams in each tournament qualified for the European Championship. Those born between 1985 and 1989 were eligible for the qualifying round.
Germany played in Group 2 with Luxembourg, Turkey and Denmark on October 20 in Saarbrücken-Gersweiler. Switzerland and Austria had not reported a team.
The team of the German Pétanque Association played with Jannik Schaake, Florian Korsch, Till-Vincent Goetzke and Mahmut Tufan.

EM women
Only 9 nations had registered for the European Women's Championships. Therefore no round of qualification was held. There was also a German team at the start. Before the start of the final round, the Czech Republic withdrew from the tournament.

Group games
The German men played in Group B. Three of the four teams each won two games and lost one. The Netherlands and Germany each had 5 individual wins. At the end of the day, 7 points or the direct comparison were decisive for progress. Germany only took 3rd place in the group and was fifth in the European Championship.
