history
April 24, 1824 is assumed to be the founding date of the Markomannia. The date cannot be proven directly, it is based on traditional records. Own written reports from the early days of the connection had to be kept secret because of the persecution by the school. Upon discovery, they were confiscated. It should also be noted that up to the turn of the century most of the students came from abroad and, like university students, had board and lodging with local residents. After leaving school, there was hardly any contact with one another. Written documents and objects that testified to the connection, such as ribbons, hats or tobacco pipes were lost as a result of these circumstances.
The events in connection life are recorded in the so-called annals. The annals report on convents, pubs, foundation festivals and special events. Despite the difficulties described above, the volumes of the annals from 1848 to 1870 could be passed on and stored, as were the volumes from 1872 onwards. The volumes collected up to 1870 were housed with attorney Anton Kastner after the First World War . They burned in 1945 in his apartment during a bomb attack on Rastatt. The volumes from 1872 onwards were with Dr. Julius Zimmermann kept. His house was confiscated by the occupying forces for a long time. These annals may not have been destroyed, but they are lost. Only one volume, namely that for the years 1893 to 1897, has surfaced again.
For the 100th foundation festival in 1924, a short history was drawn up from the annals that were still in existence at the time. The most important data from the history of the connection are recorded in it. Since there were no more annals for the period before 1848, the dates of the events before 1848 must be based on tradition. This was certainly not an oral tradition up to the creation of the historical abstract, but mentions in the annals after 1848. In the following, objects and testimonies from the archive of PV Markomannia are reported, which refer to the dates of the historical abstract from 1924 and thus confirm these dates. Some of these items came into the possession of PV Markomannia long after the history abstract was drawn up.
The most important reference to the founding time is the “school conference protocol” of March 30, 1835 from the archive of the Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium. This protocol, which could only be viewed 120 years after it was written, confirms the tradition from around 1830 recorded in the history summary.
Today there is a connection with around 250 members from Aktivitas (active lads, inactive lads and foxes) and the old men association.
