The Institute of the Pan-African University for Water and Energy Sciences (including climate change) ( English Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (including Climate Change) ) is one of the five hub facilities of the Pan-African University (PAU), a network university that the Wants to develop the level of higher education, science and technology in Africa to an academically high (excellence) level. The PAU is an initiative of the African Union (AU) and consists of five network institutes in the five African regions of North, East, South, West and Central Africa as well as a rectorate in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa . Each of the institutes is supported by an international partner.

PAUWES is based at the Abou-Bekr-Belkaid University of Tlemcen in Algeria and is the network institute for the North African region. The establishment of PAUWES and the PAU Rectorate are supported by Germany .

German contribution

A PAU steering group was founded in Germany in 2010 under the leadership of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development to accompany the development of the Pan-African University. The Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the Foreign Office , the German Society for International Cooperation , the KfW Development Bank and the German Academic Exchange Service are involved.

The Federal Republic of Germany has taken on the partnership for the topics of water, renewable energy and climate change and supports the institutional development of the PAUWES Institute in Algeria. The cooperation should go beyond development policy instruments and also include university and research cooperation with German and international partners. The practical relevance of teaching and research should also be ensured through close cooperation with the private sector. Studies at the PAUWES Institute started in October 2014.

In the summer of 2014, PAUWES agreed a first university cooperation with a German university consortium. The consortium consists of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , the Bonn Center for Development Research and the United Nations University in Bonn.

The Federal Republic is supporting the development of the Pan-African University with a total of 29 million euros.
