Building of the police detention center in Hernalser Gürtel

The police detention center in Hernalser Gürtel is the largest police detention center (PAZ) in Austria.

The PAZ is in Josefstadt . As of May 2018, 140 deportation prisoners were being held in the prison, mostly Algerians, Moroccans, Nigerians and Afghans. In the whole of 2017, 3200 deportations were processed through this PAZ.

The majority of the inmates receive information during the day. A courtyard walk of one hour a day is planned. The inmates clean their cells themselves. Visits are allowed once a week.

There were repeated hunger strikes in the PAZ. In September 2018, six deportation detainees started a fire, with which they sustained serious injuries. They wanted to use the fire to protest against an impending deportation .
