The Bhe 1/2 are electric narrow-gauge railcars of the Pilatusbahn (PB), which run exclusively on cogwheel routes that are manufactured according to the Eduard Lochers system . The Bhe 1/2 21-28 were put into service in 1937 to make the PB cheaper, more efficient and faster. Without exception, they replaced the old steam railcars from 1889. In 1954 and 1967, two more powerful railcars, the 29 and 30, were acquired.

technology

The Bhe 1/2, built for the steepest rack railway in the world, transmit their power exclusively via the cogwheels and not via the carrying wheels to the rails due to the steepness of the route. The 2 motors are installed lengthways and face the valley. There are several brakes for safety reasons. In addition to the electrical resistance brake, which is required for the descent and which is designed as an inertia brake, two independent, automatically acting brakes are installed. These act on two different pairs of gears and can each bring the vehicle to a standstill on their own. The uphill front of the vehicle is bent and the downhill front is flat. Since the energy generated during the descent cannot be fed back into the network, the pantographs remain lowered during this journey, unless the car heating is in use (seldom, since no winter operation)

particularities

Strictly speaking, railcar No. 29 does not even exist. Because it was actually only purchased as a car body . This can be placed on the Ohe 1/2 No. 31 freight railcar. Since the PB Xhe 1/2 No. 32 was commissioned in 1981, the freight railcar No. 31 has generally been equipped with the No. 29 car body.
