The Lyd1 series of Polish State Railways (PKP) is a series of narrow gauge - diesel locomotives for the track widths mm 750 and 785th Further locomotives were delivered to industrial railways under the manufacturer designations Wls150 and Wls180.
Wls150
From 1960 onwards, Fablok in Chrzanów began building three-axle narrow-gauge diesel locomotives for industrial railways under the type designation Wls150. From 1966 the Wls150 was also delivered to the PKP. There the numbers 201 to 227 (750 mm) and 305 to 310 (785 mm) and the type designation "Lyd1" were given. Although this is actually not a series designation, but only an encryption of features, it is in fact a single series, as there are no other vehicles with this combination of features in the PKP.
The individual letters of the designation "Lyd1" stand for
- L: diesel locomotive
- y: three axes
- d: high pressure internal combustion engine
- 1: mechanical power transmission
Also in 1966, the construction of locomotives for industrial railways was extended to a gauge of 900 mm. A total of 144 Wls150s had been built by 1969, 33 of them for the PKP.
Wls180
From 1969 an externally identical variant with a more powerful engine was built near Zastal in Zielona Góra . This design was called "Wls180" according to the increased performance, the manufacturer name was "803D". A total of 47 units were built up to 1972, 6 of them for the PKP (numbers 251 to 256). There they were also given the designation "Lyd1". The Wls180 was only built for 750 mm and 785 mm gauges.
Use at the PKP
The Lyd1 was used on many 750 mm PKP railways. They served as a shunting locomotive and for light freight and passenger trains. The use in passenger traffic decreased after the availability of the MBxd2 series , but ended with the Ełcka Kolej Dojazdowa and the Krotoszyńska Kolej Dojazdowa at the end of the 1990s.
