The PKP series SM02 is a simple shunting locomotive of the type Ls40, which was used for light shunting tasks at train stations.

history

From 1952 to 1961 a total of 581 locomotives were manufactured, which, due to their poor performance , could not establish themselves in use on the Polish railway PKP . The small service weight of only 16 tons and the compact design meant that the smallest diesel locomotive built in Poland after the Second World War only allowed a few areas of use.

In contrast to state railway operations, the series enjoyed lively use as a miniature locomotive for industrial sidings and works railways. In the meantime, most locomotives have either been sold or scrapped, as the decline in local freight shipments is causing the fields of activity to continue to shrink. Some of the locomotives were retrofitted with more powerful engines.

About ten copies have been preserved as a museum, Ls40 4043 is being refurbished by a Polish railway association and is to be made operational again.
