The PL-4 ( Chinese 霹雳 -4 , Pinyin Pīlì - "clap of thunder") is a draft of an air combat missile of the People's Republic of China that never got beyond the prototype stage .
It resembles an American AIM-7D and was developed from 1966 in the "Air-to-Air Missile Research Academy" (previously known as "Institute 607" or "EOTDC") of the AVIC1 in Luoyang in the province of Henan . Due to technical problems and political influences, the development was delayed, so that it was not until 1980 that a first model was available for tests on the ground and in 1984 one for flight tests.
Two versions were planned, one with a semi-active radar seeker head ( PL-4A ), the other with an infrared seeker head ( PL-4B ).
Since the desired performance could not be proven, the development program was discontinued in 1985 without a weapon of this type having been taken into active service.
