The professional association PROPAK and the association PROPAK Austria, based in Vienna, represent the industrial manufacturers of paper and cardboard products in Austria . Members include 138 companies with around 9,180 employees. In contrast to the paper industry , the PROPAK companies manufacture products from paper and cardboard. The main products include paper goods (37.9%), corrugated cardboard and corrugated cardboard packaging (24.5%), folding boxes and solid cardboard boxes (16.2%), hygiene paper products (10.0%), office and organizational materials (5.2 %) and flexible and other packaging (6.2%).

history

The industrial association, which unites the producers of paper and cardboard products, was founded in Vienna in 1921. In 1946 the organization was renamed the PPV. Since April 1, 2015, the association has been known as PROPAK and thus forms an umbrella for the three previous branch institutions: PPV became the professional association PROPAK , the employers' association PPV Austria became PROPAK Austria and the school association became the PROPAK educational forum . The main reason for the re- branding was to differentiate itself from the paper industry that supplies raw materials.

Professional organizations

PROPAK combines three institutions under one roof:

  • The professional association PROPAK is the legal representation of interests within the scope of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce . Members are all companies in Austria that are authorized to process paper in industrial form.
  • PROPAK Austria is a free business association and platform for the industries. Since October 2001, 70 industrial manufacturers of paper and cardboard products have been members.
  • The PROPAK education forum is the operative organization in all matters of education and training. It oversees the training of skilled workers, courses and courses for further education and cooperates with training institutes in Germany and abroad.

In addition, PROPAK also serves as a platform and umbrella association for the individual industry associations in the packaging sector, such as Forum Wellpappe Austria, the folding box industry, the Association of the Flexible Packaging Industry, ARGE Beverage Carton, the Association of Industrial Bookbinders, the Association of the Tube Industry, the Association of Cardboard Manufacturers and ARGE Packaging Printing.
In addition, the trade association is a member of various European and international organizations, such as CITPA (International Confederation of Paper and Cardboard Converters in Europe), INTERGRAF (European Association for Printing and Digital Communication) or FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Cardboard Manufacturers).

Occupational fields of the industrial manufacture of products from paper and cardboard are in the areas of packaging technology, printing and bookbinding. The basis for these professions include the apprenticeships for packaging technology, bookbinding, prepress technology and printing technology or the FH degree in packaging technology at the FH Campus Wien . In addition, PROPAK itself offers a training and further education program via the PROPAK education forum.

sustainability

A consumer survey carried out by Pro Carton in the seven largest European countries confirms that the sustainability of the packaging in particular is decisive for the purchase of a product: three quarters of all consumers choose products that are ecologically packaged. The sustainability charter documents the industry's commitment to the environment, employees and location. In 2019, the Institute for Industrial Ecology analyzed the status quo of the industry in the three areas of sustainability (ecology, economy, social). In the environmental area, PROPAK scores clearly through the use of renewable raw materials from sustainably managed forests and the high use of recycling materials, according to study author Andreas Windsperger, managing director of the Institute for Industrial Ecology. PROPAK companies are characterized by their high raw material and energy efficiency in the processing and refinement of products made of paper and cardboard.
