PSPP is software for analyzing statistical data. The program is a free and fully compatible replacement for the proprietary program SPSS designed, but covers so far only a limited amount of its functions from. It has a graphical user interface and can be controlled via a command line .

Functions

PSPP can import Excel , Gnumeric , OpenDocument Spreadsheet, CSV , ASCII and Postgres data and export it to the SPSS Portable, the SPSS System and the ASCII format. PSPP can be used to perform t-tests , analysis of variance , linear regressions, and a variety of other statistical operations. The program has a wide range of options for recoding, rearranging and changing data.

background

The PSPP project was initiated to give users the opportunity to avoid the limitations of SPSS. Customers are prohibited from copying or altering the program under the SPSS Terms of Use. SPSS can be bought or rented. A free full version of SPSS, the original, is also available for download. This trial version can be used for 14 days after installation. In newer versions of SPSS, digital rights management is built in, which is used to prevent the use of the software after the rental period has expired. The user of the rental version has to renew the license after one year. The purchase license can be used without restriction and for an unlimited period. The only limitation of the term and number of variables is the SPSS student license, which can be purchased through bookshops. However, this is not sold by the manufacturer of SPSS itself, but by an independent company.

The author of PSPP therefore decided to create a free alternative that is fully compatible with SPSS, which knows neither an expiration of the license nor an artificial limitation of the number of variables and which anyone is allowed to copy, modify and exchange.

The name PSPP is an allusion to the proprietary counterpart SPSS, but in contrast to it has no official meaning. Instead, the author made several proposals as P erfect S tatistics P rofessionally P resented or P eople S hould P refer P SPP.

PSPP is written in C and uses the GNU Scientific Library for its math routines and plotutils to generate diagrams.
