PTS-DOS 6.51CD, 1997

PTS-DOS is an MS-DOS replica from Russia . Almost the entire operating system is written in assembler and is therefore very compact and relatively fast. PTS-DOS differs more from MS-DOS than PC-DOS and DR-DOS . For example, instead of CONFIG.SYS there is a CONFIG.PTS file , which is syntactically different from the former and offers more configuration options.

There are two compatibility modes : In one mode, PTS-DOS is optimized for maximum free memory and high system performance, but compatibility suffers from this (e.g. Microsoft Windows 3.x can no longer be started). The other so-called "Windows compatibility mode" is more compatible, but offers less free DOS memory.

PTS-DOS was originally developed for the military by PhysTechSoft, a company founded in 1991, with the support of the Russian Ministry of Defense . After approval for commercial marketing, PTS-DOS 6.4 was released in 1993. After the release of version 6.5, some programmers left PhysTechSoft - allegedly because of gross differences of opinion on the development strategy of PTS-DOS - took the source code for PTS-DOS with them and founded their own company " Paragon " in order to further develop their version of PTS-DOS. The result was PTS DOS 6.51CD, which fixed some of the most serious bugs in PhysTechSoft's PTS-DOS 6.5. PhysTechSoft responded with the accusation that taking the source code with you violated copyright law and even Russian military laws, but then also released a bug-corrected version: PTS-DOS 6.6.

PhysTechSoft's PTS-DOS was renamed with version 6.7 to “PTS-DOS 2000”, the version 7.0 expanded to include FAT32 support then to “PTS-DOS 32”. In addition, PTS-DOS supports 32 hard disk access via LBA and the included XMS driver manages up to 4 GiB of RAM . In addition, PTS-DOS 32 requires at least a 386 processor.

Paragon's PTS DOS was offered as "Paragon DOS 2000 Pro" and also supported FAT32 and LBA . In the meantime Paragon has stopped the further development of PTS DOS and no longer offers the operating system, although it can still be purchased from other providers including source code.
