PUMA (robot)
The PUMA is a widely used industrial robot . The name stands for Programmable Universal Machine for Assembly ( programmable, universal assembly machine ) or Programmable Universal Manipulation Arm ( programmable, universal handling arm ). Structurally, it is characterized in that its in full six degrees of freedom of movable manipulator exclusively to rotary joints based (as opposed to a combination with translational joints such. As when SCARA -Industrieroboter).
The PUMA was developed by Victor Scheinman at Unimation , the first robot manufacturer. Scheinman had previously developed the underlying principles at MIT and Stanford University as part of the Stanford Arm project. The company was bought by Westinghouse in 1980 and Stäubli in 1988 . The original PUMA was presented to the Smithsonian Institution as an exhibit in 2003 .
