Unimation is the manufacturer of the Unimate industrial robot and thus the world's first robotics manufacturer . The company was founded in 1956 by the Americans Joseph Engelberger and George Devol . In 1959, the company introduced a prototype of the Unimate robot used by General Motors .

The company's name is a portmanteau and an abbreviation for Universal Automation ( Engl. , Universal Automation ).
