Pabo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pabo (also Babo or with the addition Graf ; † after 860 ) was administrator of the Franconian county of Carantania in the Bavarian Ostland from 840 and probably belonged to the Wilhelminer family .

He was one of the highest officials and rulers of Bavaria under the East Frankish King Ludwig the German . Politically he was subordinate to the Prefect of the East.

Live and act

In 828 the Slavic Duchy of Carantania was converted into a Frankish county . Pabo was the third count of Carantania after Helmwin and Albgar. It is possible that several counts of equal rank were active in the Carantania region at that time. At Pabo's request, King Ludwig the German gave Count Witigowo property in the Admont Valley.

He had considerable influence on politics in the Bavarian Ostland. At the request of Pabos, Count Werner and Baturich , Bishop of Regensburg , in 844 King Ludwig the German gave the priest Dominicus an estate near Brunnaron in what is now Burgenland . In 848 he participated together with the highest Bavarian dignitaries in the award of the Pannonian Principality to Prince Pribina in Regensburg .

In 856 the king's son Karlmann was appointed prefect of the Ostmark, which Pabo did not agree with. Nevertheless, Pabo did not share the fate of some other counts who were deposed by Karlmann for the time being, because in 859 the king also documented again on Pabo's intercession. It was not until 861, when Karlmann began to operate an independent policy in the Ostmark, that Pabo lost its county. Pabo was driven out by Karlmann and replaced by Count Gundakar. Pabo fled to Salzburg, where he probably had property of his own. At that time the king was staying in Salzburg, at whose court there was a violent mood against the king's son.
