Pagenwerder is a small inland island divided into two parts in the Breitling , a bodden-like extension of the Unterwarnow shortly before it flows into the Baltic Sea . It is only separated from the mainland, with the Rostock district of Hohe Düne to the north, by the three hundred meter wide pinnengraben. The port of Rostock is south of the island . The partially artificially enlarged, uninhabited island is a landscape protection area (bird breeding ground). The original island of Pagenwerder is in front of the southern, mostly artificial part of the island. Both parts are connected by a dam.

The southern part of the island is, with an area of about one hectare, about 520 meters long and about 235 meters wide. The northern part is about 7,700 m². The island lies entirely within the urban area of Rostock.

history

The island name means something like horse island . Presumably there used to be a horse pasture on the island, and probably a goose pasture on the neighboring island of Gänsewerder .

Pagenwerder has been redesigned several times over the centuries. The island, which was originally located west of the access to the Baltic Sea, was punctured until 1837, which divided it into two parts. Part of it was later connected to the mainland. In the years 1958/59 it was reduced again by the construction of the sea canal in the course of the construction of the new overseas port. The island, which was around one kilometer long on the Schmettauschen map , has now clearly lost its size. In 1988 the Rostock city council decided to enlarge it. It was not until 1999 that a kidney-shaped area was washed up south of the old island, which corresponds to the current larger part of the island. The original island is the island offshore to the north. The formerly nearby island of Gänsewerder gradually disappeared due to floods and waves in the 1990s.
