Mathis Giger the elder
Mathis Giger (mentioned from 1556 in Basel ; † 1582 ibid) was a Swiss carpenter of German origin.
Life
Mathis Giger came from Pfullendorf and is documented as a carpenter in Basel from 1556, where he acquired the guild rights of the spinning weather guild . 1578–1582 he created the vault cladding and the interior fittings in the art cabinet of the lawyer and art collector Basilius Amerbach , for whom he created additional furniture and picture frames in 1580. The only thing that has survived is a coin box, which is now in the Basel Historical Museum . He died of the plague in 1582.
His three sons Conrad , Leonhard and Mathis also learned to be a carpenter.
