Painting & Patronage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Painting & Patronage is one of the leading cultural and artistic exchange programs between Saudi Arabia and abroad.

history

It was founded in 1999 by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal , son of the late King Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz . This organization is led by Anthony Bailey. The fundamental interest is to build a bridge between artistic and educational understanding between the West and the Arab world, under which a deeper understanding of the mutual differences and the different cultures and traditions are based.

The first Painting and Patronage initiative took place at the Banqueting House in London under the auspices of the Prince of Wales and Prince Khalid Al-Faisal in June 2000, and the exhibition included watercolors and oil paintings by both princes. With the help of sponsorship from British companies ( BAE Systems and Shell ), a freely accessible summer school for young artists was established between The Prince's Foundation and the King Faisal Foundation.

In return, an exhibition, the second painting and patronage initiative, took place in Riyadh in 2001 in the presence of both princes. This event is considered to be the largest art exchange program ever held between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. Queen Elizabeth II visited the exhibition in London, and in Riyadh the initiative of King Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz of Saudi Arabia was opened.

The third Painting and Patronage event took place between Saudi Arabia and Portugal and featured images of Prince Khalid Al-Faisal. The course of these exhibitions was similar to that of the London and Riyadh exhibitions. The initiative was launched by Jorge Sampaio , President of the Portuguese Republic, in the Palácio Nacional de Sintra and was under his auspices.

The fourth initiative followed in Riyadh in April 2007. It featured a large number of contemporary Portuguese artists and was opened by Crown Prince Sultan ibn Abd al-Aziz and Isabel Pires de Lima, Portuguese Minister of Culture.

In 2007 the King of Saudi Arabia took over the patronage of the organization. This current royal initiative is full of plans for further exchanges with other nations, including Brazil, in 2008.
