history

Pinnawala Express

Pinnawala Express, 2005

The Pinnawala Express orbited from 2003 on a 1.7 km long, circular narrow gauge railway with 600 mm gauge non-stop anti-clockwise, the central and eastern lagoons. Around 2010 the route was moved further south to cross the Kingdom of Ganesha and to extend the route. In 2012 the route was moved further east and ran on a longer route behind the Lemur Archipelago to the south behind the Kingdom of Ganesha.

The train consisted of a diesel locomotive disguised as a steam locomotive, which was a true-to-scale model of an English locomotive used in Ceylon, and three bogie passenger cars with open sides. In 2014 the circular route was abandoned and partially dismantled.

In 2015, a new circular line with a gauge of 600 mm was put into operation. This 2.5 km stretch runs from the narrow-gauge train station near the Moulin des Moines to the lagoons and passes through several enclosures. In the north-west there is a short branch line to the 700 m² engine shed and railway museum in the style of a depot from 1920.

The first train, which went into service at the beginning of 2015, consists of a completely overhauled Polish steam locomotive from 1954 and four new bogie cars that are replicas of Decauville cars from 1916. In July, a second train, consisting of a steam locomotive built in Germany in 1917 and four new bogie cars, went into operation.

In July 2016, for a symbolic price of CHF 1 per vehicle, three railcars built in 1954, a K-car and a flat car, which had previously been used in Switzerland on the Chemin de fer Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry (AOMC) of the Transports publics du Chablais (TPC) were in use. The railcar 514 and the two cars have been exhibited at the locomotive shed outdoors on a meter gauge track since 2017.

Two railcars were repainted in their last color scheme, the third in its original color scheme, gray above and red below with the AOMC logo. These railcars are to run on a 2 km long meter-gauge railway that is to be built between the SNCB's Brugelette station and the park. There are also plans to create an alpine landscape setting in the park with a life-size replica of the old Champéry train station .
