Palacio Municipal

The Palacio Municipal is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

As a result of a competition between 1929 and 1930 for its construction in 1936 - according to other sources, the year 1935 is given as the date of the start of construction - it is located in Barrio Centro and is there on Avenida 18 de Julio 1352- 1360 as well as the streets Ejido , Soriano and Santiago de Chile . The 78-meter-high building, designed by architect Mauricio Cravotto , was inaugurated on July 16, 1941 after construction began, although it differed from the architect's original plans. Contrary to the plan, which provided for a height of 114 meters, the building had to be modified for financial reasons. Up until 1968, the building was expanded in stages. For many years the building was popularly referred to as the Monumento al Ladrillo and thus the brick monument . On the forecourt of the building there has been a replica of the David sculpture by Michelangelo , inaugurated on August 25, 1931, since April 7, 1958 , and its original location at the intersection of Avenida Gral. Rivera with Juan D. Jackson and Arenal Grande Streets .

The building houses the headquarters of the Montevideo City Council . The property on which the Palacio Municipal stands previously served various purposes. It once housed the English cemetery and served as a military parade ground as well as a place for agricultural exhibitions or carnival activities.

Since 1995 the Palacio Municipal has been classified as a Bien de Interés Municipal .
