The Palais Damian is on the 8th Viennese district of Josefstadt , Lange Gasse 53rd

history

The baroque palace was built around 1700 by an unknown master builder for Karl August von Damian, a rich timber merchant, originally with open arcades and a flat roof, as a garden palace. In 1774, under the new owner Daniel von Zepharovich, Liborius Thaddäus Gerl added a floor and added two wings to the side, so that a courtyard of honor was created. The arcades were closed and the palace was surrounded by a wall. The publisher Moritz Szeps lived here from 1885 to 1897, and his wife ran a literary salon . The municipality of Vienna has owned the palace since 1936. During the Second World War, the Vienna Boys' Choir was rented in the palace. Today it is the seat of the KOBV - The Disabled Association for Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.

description

The grooved plinth zone with pilaster structure encloses a basket arch arcade in the central zone, which was originally open and led into a sala terrena . The side wings are connected to the older wing by a single-axis wall. A dazzling balustrade with vertical oval motifs runs over the arcade arches. The motif of the arcade arches is repeated on the upper floors through blind arches, which are supported by Corinthian columns with clearly separated column drums. The side wings are structured by flat pilasters. The windows of the main floor have a straight Konsolverdachung and layered plaster fields in the parapets and camber fields. The main courtyard is separated from the street by a pillar fence with grid fields. Two grooved portal pillars with a beautiful wrought iron gate form the entrance. In front of the pillars there is a column with a Corinthian capital and a richly profiled flat gable on which putti and vases stand.
