Esterházy Palace (Kärntner Strasse)
The Esterházy Palace on Kärntner Strasse is a palace in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City . It is the oldest building on Kärntner Straße and is still owned by the Esterházy family today .
history
At the current location of the palace there were originally two different houses that were only united at the beginning of the 15th century. In 1684 this property came into the possession of the Imperial Councilor Adam Antonius Grundemann von Falkenberg. His son finally commissioned the construction of today's palace. The palace remained in the possession of the Grundemann family until 1767, who were raised to the rank of count in 1716 . Then it came into the possession of the court chamber councilor Franz Freiherr von Harrucker through purchase.
From 1777 to 1871 the palace belonged to Count Károlyi. At that time, under Josefa Countess Károlyi, the facade was redesigned to its present form and a balcony was added. Further minor redesigns took place in 1833. Originally the palace had an inner courtyard, which was later extended to the upper floor. In 1871 the palace finally passed into the possession of the Esterházy family through the purchase of the property by Count Moritz Esterházy from Count Alois Károlyi. The count then had the interior of the palace redesigned. On the main front ( Annagasse side ) is the entrance portal with the Esterhazys coat of arms.
On January 25, 1968, the interior of the palace was almost completely destroyed by fire . After the repair and renovation work, the Casino Cercle Vienna was finally opened in 1969 . This was enlarged several times and can still be found in the palace today. Only a few fragments of the former Empire- style furnishings are left. Most of the rooms are now decorated with contemporary works of art.
