Meckel Palace

The Palais Meckel is under monument protection standing villa in Wuppertal district Elberfeld at the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße . A coach house belongs to the villa (today in the backyard; 51 ° 15 ′ 20.8 ″  N , 7 ° 8 ′ 23.5 ″  E ).

The property, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 15 , is opposite the Laurentius Church and thus on Laurentiusplatz . The house was built after 1849 (another source mentions around 1840) after the church and the square (then “Königsplatz”) were built. The villa on Königsstrasse, as Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse was called at that time, originally stood next to Daniel von der Heydt's house , which was built earlier. The two single-storey side wings of this house, on which there were terraces, were laid down around 1900 and another residential building was built between Daniel von der Heydt's house and the Meckel palace.

The western parcel in front of the Laurentius Church was originally acquired by August von der Heydt in 1830 , six years later the eastern parcel was acquired by Daniel von der Heydt . The western parcel was sold in August 1848 after his appointment as minister.

The three-storey five-axis villa is built in the classical style. There is a small balcony above the entrance. The client was the textile manufacturer Caspar Wilhelm Meckel (1790–1852) (or his son Wilhelm Meckel (1815–1879)). The architect is not occupied, the author Herman J. Mahlberg would like to award the building to Christian Heyden .

The neighboring property of Daniel von der Heydt (1802–1874) was sold by his daughter in 1880 to the merchant Wilhelm Meckel after his death.

Today the villa is used by the Catholic community as an administrative building and the coach house was leased to a restaurateur of fine Italian cuisine. On October 11, 1984, the building ensemble was placed under monument protection.
