Daniel von der Heydt (born October 31, 1802 in Elberfeld (now in Wuppertal ); † July 7, 1874 at Morsbroich Castle near Schlebusch ) was a banker , entrepreneur and politician .

origin

Daniel von der Heydt came from the respected merchant family von der Heydt zu Elberfeld . His father was Daniel Heinrich von der Heydt (1767-1832), banker, city councilor, mayor and president of the commercial court in Elberfeld. His mother was his wife Wilhelmine Kersten (1771-1854). His grandfather Abraham Kersten (1733–1796) from Spangenberg in Hesse was also a banker and merchant. He founded the Abraham Kersten banking house as early as 1754 and took Daniel von der Heydt on as a partner in 1794, thus creating the von der Heydt-Kersten banking house . His brothers were August (1801–1874) and Carl von der Heydt (1806–1881). He himself married Bertha Rosalia Wülfing in 1827.

Life

After private tuition and attending the reformed Latin school in Elberfeld , Daniel joined his father's banking house von der Heydt-Kersten & Sons as an apprentice . On their behalf, he stayed in Livorno and Milan for several years . In 1837 he became a partner in his father's bank and was also successful in trading raw silk. In 1857, after theological arguments with his brother Carl, he gave up his shares in the bank and concentrated on the commercial business.

In addition, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Elberfeld and Barmen from 1833 to 1843 and in 1848 , in whose tradition the IHK Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid is today. In 1836 he was one of the co-founders of the steam shipping company for the Lower and Middle Rhine . He also sat on the supervisory board of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

In addition, Daniel von der Heydt was a co-founder of the Dutch Reformed Church in Elberfeld in 1847 and was one of the initiators of the Elberfeld system of poor relief in 1852/53 .

In 1850 he was a member of the Erfurt Union Parliament . From 1853 to 1860 he was unpaid, associate mayor of the city of Elberfeld. As a representative of Barmen and Elberfeld, he was a member of the Prussian manor house from 1854 to 1860 .
