The three regional commands now subordinated their respective areas to the new home front command .

The Civilian Defense's Chief Officer Corps Command , which had previously coordinated the activities of the three regional commands in this area, also transferred its responsibility to the new command.

Since then there have been a number of initiatives to transfer this area of responsibility back to a civilian organization, but the military authorities managed to maintain the status quo .

The unit was set up in 1974. The first members originally belonged to the paratrooper brigade , which had taken on CSAR tasks since 1972.

The 669th takes on air rescue and SAR tasks in the civilian sector, which is also seen as training for CSAR operations. It has also been used in various special operations. For example the attack on a hotel in Mombasa or Operation Salomon , in which Jewish refugees were evacuated from the Ethiopian - Sudanese border area.

Candidates are selected directly in the integration center and, after a selection test, go to a 14-week basic training course. a. already contains 50 km marches with stretchers. This is followed by another 14-week course, this time for training as a "Combat Medic". Now the candidates reach the 669th and complete the skydiving course as well as courses on tactics and technique within 8 weeks. This is followed by a 40-week training course within the 669th.

The level of training is that of combat swimmers or tele-scouts and the medical training is more intensive than that of "normal" paramedics. A task force usually consists of an officer , six soldiers and a doctor.

Various helicopter types ( CH-53 , Bell UH-1D , UH-60 ) can be used as rescue equipment . The CH-53 also transports equipment vehicles in order to bring rescue equipment to the place of use even if, for example in urban terrain, there is no possibility of landing at the place of use.
