Israeli Northern Command

The Northern Command ( Hebrew פיקוד צפון, Pikud Tzafon ) is one of the three regional commandos of the Israeli Armed Forces and, in addition to controlling the northern section of the country, is responsible for protecting the borders with Syria and Lebanon .

history

During the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973, the North Command was responsible for directing operations against the Syrian troops in the Golan Heights and on the Lebanese border. In the 1970s and 1980s it was primarily confronted with attacks by the PLO , which had relocated its base of operations to (South) Lebanon since Black September 1970. After the Lebanon campaign in 1982, the North Command was increasingly busy with operations against the terrorist organization Hezbollah . In 2000 , the Northern Command completed the withdrawal of all Israeli troops from the security zone in southern Lebanon and moved to new positions along the of the UN established the Blue Line . Despite the withdrawal from the occupied territories, Hezbollah attacks on units of the North Command continue, particularly on Mount Dov, a part of the Hermon Mountains , which was occupied by Israel in 1967 and which Hezbollah claims as Lebanese territory.

The units of the Northern Command are stationed from Hermon in the north to Netanya in the south, with a focus on Galilee and the Golan Heights . Major General (Aluf) Joel Strik has been the commander of the North Command since 2017 .
