The unit 621 , also known as Egoz ( German  walnut , Hebrew יחידת אגוז, Jehidat Egoz ), is an elite unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that specializes in guerrilla warfare , special military reconnaissance and direct military operations . They also perform tasks such as asymmetrical warfare , protests, counter-terrorism and special operations together with other units. The Egoz unit is part of the 89th Commando Brigade along with the Maglan unit and the Duvdevan unit .

Prior to 2000, Egoz worked mainly in Lebanon to combat Hezbollah threats . After Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon, many of its operations take place in the West Bank and Gaza Strip .

The members of the Egoz unit go through a rigorous selection process and then go through one of the most difficult and physically demanding training programs of the Israeli armed forces. The Egoz training program is designed to push recruits to their mental and physical limits in order to prepare them for their assignments. The tactical focus is on Shayetet 13 ( Hebrew שַׁיֶּטֶת 13, German  Flotilla 13 ), a combat swimmer unit of the Israeli Navy . Egoz missions are carried out in small teams. The Israel Defense Forces do not disclose any information about the unit or its operations.
