House Daniel Von der Heydt

The house Daniel Von der Heydt is a monument protected villa in Wuppertal district Elberfeld at the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße .

Building description

The property, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 13, is opposite the Laurentius Church and thus on Laurentiusplatz . The house was built in 1842 after the construction of the church and the square (then “Königsplatz”). The villa on Königsstrasse, as Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse was called at the time, was originally free-standing. Later further houses were built to the west and east, so that today there is a closed house front on Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse, here in this section a single-lane commercial street.

The client was Daniel von der Heydt , who lived here with his wife and six children. The Von der Heydts were regarded as one of the leading personalities in Elberfeld and received numerous prominent guests in his house. Like his brother August , he belonged to the Friedrich Wilhelm IV Circle of Friends , who was repeatedly a guest in the house.

The house is three-storey, built in the classicist style and provided with a sandstone facade suitable for the work . Only one of the painted window panes still exists today, the others were destroyed in the Second World War. Many interior walls are decorated with wall paintings , so there are motifs of flower arrangements or Italian landscapes. The large garden at the back reached as far as the Wupper in the 19th century . In the 20th century there was an ice cream parlor and the “Engel pharmacy” here. The pharmacy was given up in 1995 and taken over by the owner of the ice cream parlor, who now runs a café / bar there.

On July 28, 1986, the building was protected as a historical monument and entered in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.
