Vikram Pandit (born January 14, 1957 in Nagpur , Maharashtra , India ) is an American manager .

Life

Pandit was born in Nagpur in the Indian state of Maharashtra in 1957. In 1973 he moved to the USA and became an American citizen. He studied at Columbia University in New York and received a Bachelor of Science in 1976 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1977 and a Ph. D. in Macroeconomics and Financial Markets in 1986 .

From 1983 he worked as an investment banker for Morgan Stanley and was President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Institutional Securities and Investment Banking Group at Morgan Stanley (2000-2004), where he was responsible for the entire administration of the group and focused on commercial , Sales and infrastructure aspects of the business focused.

Prior to that, he served as General Manager and Head of the Worldwide Institutional Equities Division (1994-2000), and General Manager and Head of the US Equity Syndicate (1990-1994) for Morgan Stanley. Pandit left Morgan Stanley in 2005 with a few colleagues and founded in April 2006, the hedge fund Old Lane Partners, to Citigroup in July 2007 for 800 million US dollars bought. Initially, he was responsible for Citigroup's alternative investments. In October 2007, further investment lines were added.

Pandit serves on the boards of directors of Columbia University , Columbia Business School , Indian School of Business, and The Trinity School . He is a past member of the board of directors of NASDAQ (2000–2003) and the New York City Investment Fund.

On 11 December 2007 Pandit, instead of the interim - CEO Sir Winfried Bischoff , the new CEO of Citigroup. He succeeded Charles Prince, who resigned on November 5, 2007 due to unexpectedly poor business results, mainly due to double-digit billion write-offs due to the real estate credit crisis.

On October 16, 2012, Pandit resigned as CEO and also resigned from all board positions. Michael Corbat was elected by the board of directors as Pandit's successor as CEO.
